Local Goods: Khaki’s Bomb Balm

December 19, 2016

It is no secret I love locally made goods! Which is why I have been waiting to find just the right time to catch up with Khaki Paquette, creator of an all nature skincare line based in Newburyport.  As many of you are still on the lookout for Holiday gifts, why not check out some of her amazing products here, and don’t forget to use the code NBPTLOVE to receive 25% off from now until December 31st!

ND: Who are you and what do you do?

I’m Khaki! I’m a mother of 2 little ones, an esthetician and owner of Face Food natural skincare studio. When I’m not being mom, I am at the studio hand crafting my skincare line and running my small business. I have been an esthetician for about ten years, started making my own products two years ago, and opened up the skincare studio six months later. All of the products are 100% natural and hand crafted with love right in the studio. I also offer a full menu of holistic facials and natural waxing services.

ND: When did you begin to notice the need for handmade all natural products?
I had previously lived and worked in Seattle where the Spa was much more holistically focused. When I moved back East, I noticed there just wasn’t the same importance placed on “all natural,” in the Spa industry. I found myself disappointed with my job, and felt like a fraud trying to sell products I didn’t really believe in. I stand by the theory that if you wouldn’t put it in your body, you shouldn’t put it on your body. There are so many toxic chemicals in our personal care products that can cause a slew of problems, that is entire other article all in itself!

ND: I’m curious about how things started, was there a lot of trial and error? Were you making things in your home ?
I did start in my kitchen! My first-born was 6 months old and we were living on Plum Island. I started by making balms out of raw shea butter and essential oils (I LOVE shea butter). I began researching, experimenting, and before I knew it I was a human guinea pig. It did, and still does, take a lot of trial and error. Some things were particularly harder to formulate, like the Happy Pits Deodorant Cream. With deodorant, it either works or it doesn’t.

ND: What would you say every person should put on their face daily?
Moisturize,  every day! Ideally everyone would cleanse their skin, apply a hydrating moisturizer, and a little sunscreen (even in the winter). Everyone’s skin is different, so someone might benefit from a super rich daily moisturizer while someone else just needs a little something to keep hydrated.

ND: You’re a mother and run your own business, how do you try to create balance?
Its hard! My kids are still so little, three and a half and one. Fortunately, I have a husband who is very supportive and is home from work every day about 4pm. I work when I can, evenings, weekends etc. I’m not sure I have found that balance to be honest, sometimes I feel like I am working on some capacity 24/7. If you don’t set hours you find yourself answering emails, checking things online, and thinking about it all the time. I try to set “work hours,” and only sometimes stick to it. The biggest thing I can recommend is to put the phone away in the evening, that is family time.

ND: Tell us a bit about your studio.
I had been taking some time away from the spa to raise my daughter, but I missed taking clients and decided I needed to move out of my kitchen and into my own space where the product line could flourish. The Face Food skincare studio is at 37A Pleasant street in downtown Newburyport. The space itself is beautiful, and extremely conducive to relaxation. I offer a range of facials such as Collagen Renewal, Tropical Fusion, Teen Facials, Ginseng Lifting and more. I tailor each facial to the skins condition.  I also offer full service waxing, from brow shaping to lower leg, and everything in between. I love skincare education and have experience with every skin type.

ND: Our final, and favorite question, what are you grateful for?
I am SO grateful that I can do what I love and interests me. I feel so blessed to be able to work for myself around my family life. It may be crazy at times, but I know I am a very lucky lady.
