Have you visited Sage Market & Design in Newburyport? If not, enjoy today’s Q & A with co-owners Beverly and Jordan Fowler.
ND: Who are you and what do you do?
We are Beverly and Jordan Fowler, the Mother-Daughter duo behind Sage Market + Design. We own a retail shop in Newburyport where we sell home decor, accessories, plants, gifts, and furniture. We also offer design services to our clients including florals, wedding and event decor, and interior and exterior styling for the home or office.
The company was founded in 2012 after realizing that there was a need for an online store that offered customers good design and quality, for all areas of the home. The drive behind the online store is to make customers feel like they are shopping in their favorite boutique, while in the comfort of their own home. Our style can be described as both “casual chic” and “modern coastal.” After many years of talking about starting our own company, we finally made the decision to make the dream a reality, and opened our first storefront in this picturesque town in 2013.
Jordan: My fiancé is from Newburyport so I have been coming up here for many years to visit his friends and family. I fell in love with the town on my first visit. When it was time to start looking for a brick & mortar to go along with our online store, we immediately knew we wanted it to be in Newburyport. We love the quaint downtown, amazing restaurants, and that it is only a short drive to Plum Island. Our clients are the sweetest, most genuine people and we are lucky to consider them friends now. They have supported us since the very beginning and still do to this day. We love how people of the Greater Newburyport area really support their local businesses.
ND: Could you tell us how you source your items, and some of your favorite local products?
We love supporting local artists, businesses and creatives and will buy local products as much as possible. Some of our favorite items are our custom pillows from Bgile Designs, made right here in Newburyport, beautiful teak side tables crafted by our neighbor The Yacht Shop, delicious chocolates by Seacoast Sweets, The Everyday Napkin (Boston) and buoy bottle openers by MW Coastal Goods out of Connecticut. We have been working with local growers across New England to buy flowers and plants, and we plan on growing our local network even more!
ND: Spring is in the air here in Newburyport. Could you suggest some items for the home that could work indoors and transition outdoors as the weather warms?
Absolutely! The best way to start is with outdoor furniture. We work with some of the best outdoor furniture companies (Kingsley Bate, Gloster) and can come out to your home to help you decide the best pieces for your outdoor living space. Next, we would recommend planters to compliment the furniture and space. We have an amazing selection of pots, containers, and troughs. One of our favorite things to plant are succulents! Succulents will thrive indoors during the winter, but really begin to show off in the summer. If you have a succulent garden inside, you should bring it outside and watch it grow! Also, house plants love to be outside in the warm weather. Just make sure they are not getting too much full sun in the hotter months (July & August), a half-day of sun is best for them.
ND: You also do event decor and florals. Tell us about some of the events you have styled in the past?
We have styled all different types of events, from private low-key dinner parties, to large weddings. Beverly has been a floral designer for over twenty years. Before opening Sage, she managed Winston Flowers in both Concord and Wellesley. For our clients we can take care of all their floral needs, as well as the decor. We create the design concept of their dreams, and work really hard to bring it to life.
ND: What is your favorite local place to…
Explore Outdoors: Sandy Point, Maudslay, and Odiorne State Park
ND: Our last and favorite question: What are you grateful for?
Our clients! We are seriously so thankful for all of them. They have accepted us into their town and have shown us so much support. We opened Sage not knowing what to expect, and we are growing and changing so much every year because of them. Also, we are thankful for each other. Being a mother-daughter team has been amazing, and we both agree that Sage would not be what it is without each of us.
